The newest addition to the ever-growing list of AO3 tags that seem to straddle the border between superfluous and just plain meshugenah:

-"Non-rape"

O_O

I just--huh? Am I missing something? Totally baffling, right? I'm gonna go ahead and assume that it's meant to signify something OTHER THAN consensual sex--cause otherwise why wouldn't the author just, y'know, call it THAT? (Also, who warns for consensual sex?)

But as to its true meaning? I'm stymied. STYMIED.

...what? Really?

Huh.

*joins you in your bewilderment*

Bewilderment over! I sleuthed around a bit (because I'm the Nancy Drew of online smut, didn't you know?) and found out the creator of that tag is also the author of the infamous Lava Lamp story(!). (Such a small world...horrifyingly small, some might say) Which, while it doesn't excuse anything, certainly explains a lot. :)

So...case closed?

Consensual rape fantasy, maybe? Tags are as much about finding what you want in a fandom as avoiding what you don't want.

Or, you never know, maybe they're actually in a fandom where consensual sex in fic is so rare that people complain when they stumble across it while looking for their daily ration of sex and violence. Nothing would surprise me after my brief tour through Highlander fanfic a few years ago. My goodness, that was a lot of rape and torture.

Hm. I like your theories; fannish relativism and so forth. :) (I find the Highlander fandom terrifying, by the way. I once read a Methos/JC Chasez crossover--I couldn't even tell you where I found it--that had me quaking in my boots. My poor little JC! *valiantly shields him from 5000 year old rapists*) The only problem is that the tag in question was for a popslash fic--and while I've read plenty of sparkly BDSM in my time I don't think it's a particularly violent fandom, at least not in the grand scheme of things. (Happiness! Puppies gamboling through a flowery meadow!...um, et cetera!)

I went back and did some investigating...turns out the sole user and creator of that tag also happens to be the author of the Lava Lamp Story. WHICH HAS NOW BEEN POSTED ON AO3. So...yeah. *dies laughing*

OH MY GOD!

And it turns out that THE lava lamp story is actually part two of a series. Oh. My. God.

Ooh, cool! If you remember, there's a mention of that story in the introduction to the Lava Lamp story, and the non-graphic version of it.

Good luck with that against the immortal sword-wielding maniacs. Let's face it, JC is toast.

When you think about it, Highlander fandom is the perfectly logical place for all the really hardcore torture porn fans to congregate. It saves you from all the tiresome complaints about how what you're doing to the character is impossible and would definitely kill them/scar them for life, because -- immortal!

Unless you have a decapitation kink, I guess. Then you're shit out of luck.

I don't think it's a particularly violent fandom, at least not in the grand scheme of things.

I would have to agree with you, there. But then, my previous fandom was Blakes 7, which also loves beating up and maiming its characters.

turns out the sole user and creator of that tag also happens to be the author of the Lava Lamp Story

Oh, that's awesome! I always wondered if they were still active in fandom. I did some sleuthing myself a while back and found their name and LJ and a few other bits and pieces, but the LJ hadn't been used for many years.

Sigh. I know, I know. Me versus a savage, lust-crazed Methos? I think it's a pretty safe bet I'd run away shrieking and flapping my arms. Or pee my pants. Or both. Sorry, JC. Them's the breaks, kid.

...Now I'm wondering about the decapitation fetishists. What's THEIR fandom of choice? Or is that the least of their problems? (Probably.)
