no one ever tells me anything
Nov. 14th, 2011 11:01 pmWhy was I unaware that there has been a redux of the Sweet Valley High series? I should have been the first to know! They were a huge freaking staple of my childhood, along with the side ponytail and Lisa Frank paraphernalia (paraphernalias?)...Anyway, this one takes place ten years later and, judging from the snippet I read while standing around in Barnes and Nobles like a freeloader, Elizabeth has quit her doormat ways and is now some kind of wrathful, grudge-holding curmudgeon. I feel that this is progress for her character; I'd bake her a congratulatory cake if she weren't, you know, fictional. Not sure I'm buying Steven Wakefield as a gay man, though. It seems like such a shallow decision, like the author(s) is/are just desperate to modernize the franchise. Didn't he spend most of the college series shacking up with some bland, boring girl whose name I can't remember?
In other news, I dragged my mother to the farmers market this weekend and, while I was busy feeling up some of those giant waxy turnips, some woman turns to her and tells her she doesn't look old enough to have a daughter in high school...You can imagine how happy that made us both. :)
